I have seen the light!

As the census results come it should lead to re-apportionment of House of Representative seats. Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Montana are all disproportionately under represented, right now.  However these states should quit their collective whining. I mean really, it’s not like the U.S. has ever been overly concerned or fought wars over representation.

Over a year ago, I wrote an article showing how underrepresented much of the intermountain west and desert southwest have been over the last decade or more.  In the last decade Congress has attempted to address Utah’s lack of representation by giving the “Beehive State” a seat in the House.  While at the same time a seat would go to Washington D.C.  Never mind that D.C. is not a state and voting House seats are reserved for states.

At the time, when writing the article, I was firmly opposed to such an agreement because of D.C. not being a state. Plus that arrangement wouldn’t address the other states representation issues.  But I’ve had a change of heart.  One might say that I am suddenly enlightened.

It is time for D.C. to get proper representation and the western states should be happy that they have representation at all.  I think that it’s perfectly appropriate that these western states are underrepresented.  These are states that have a distinct lack of right thinking Americans.  People in these states are often religious.  Haven’t we had enough of the religious being heard from this country.  What with their “families” and “values.”  If these areas were better represented we would be required to endure more religious tripe.

As if that isn’t bad enough, these states have populations that too often vote the wrong way.  I know Colorado, Montana and Nevada went blue in recent elections, but these states are not consistent enough.  Utah and Idaho are nearly permanent red states.  Clearly these states don‘t deserve a greater national voice. In a few election cycles, perhaps they will have matured, and then their representation could be reviewed.  Wyoming is not one of the underrepresented states in the region, however the “Cowboy State” has shown a troubling voting record and perhaps their one, at- large House Seat is too much, perhaps they should share that house member with some of the bluer regions of New Mexico.

This region’s collective record is too troubling to be ignored.  Dick Cheney is a product of Wyoming, Sarah Palin attended college in Idaho, Karl Rove was partially educated in Utah and Arizona has shown a distinctly unsophisticated record on immigration.  Montana is perhaps best known for remarkably backward firearms laws.  Nevada and Colorado have some passable Senators like Bennett and Reid, but there is a clear chance that these Senators could be removed by reactionaries.  Even when there is some hope of enlightened thinking, in these states, the voices against change are too loud.  I suggest that until this part of the country shows more of a proper world view, Congress should enact policy that these states should be seen and not heard. Indeed, let’s avoid looking at them as well. If the country is to have any chance of lasting progress, then the population in this region should remain underrepresented.

Lastly if you disagree with me; you hate change, you simply HATE in general, you clearly don’t have the sophistication to realize what real change is and perhaps your own personal voting privileges should be revoked.
