The Specter jump and Souters announcement of retirement are just some of the opportunities that Conservatives need to stop the Obama momentum. Stopping the momentum can only happen if we are shrewed about how we package our message. There are signs that perhaps magnanimous hand of Obama may be passionately kissed by fewer people soon.
I recently was sent this anecdote in an e-mail.
The Story of 50 bucks...
I recently asked my friends' little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do? '
She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.'
Her parents beamed.
'Wow...what a worthy goal.' I told her, 'But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50.
Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house. '
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, ' Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?
I said, 'Welcome to the Republican Party.'
Her parents still aren't speaking to me.
When I Read this joke it was quite obvious to me that Conservatism is common sense. Why is it that the Conservative common sense message is not getting out? Because the Republicans don't speak about it, some don't even believe in it. Jeb Bush mentioned recently that Republicans need to let go of the Reagan Past and use the Obama model of gaining power. The Obama model of feel good terms and gigantic government is a way to ensure Republican defeat. What the Republican Party needs is to be more Conservative. As a party the Republicans need to agree on a few simple points.
- Freedom. Freedom from taxes, over the top regulation, and behavioral 'Nanny-State' laws.
- Governmental role, on all levels, should be minimal, ensuring safety and stability. Military, Police and all other peace keepers are to keep citizens safe, not to harass.
- The Constitution is the best and only compass of all rules and laws.
- Peace in the world comes from a strong United States both financially and militarily.
