Positively Fourth of July, 2010

This year we have; a poor economy, high unemployment, increasing gasoline prices, a wobbling war and the list goes on and on. There is plenty of reason to hang our heads, plenty of reason to despair. So where is the positive part? Independence day should be a reminder, not only of the birth of the greatest country the world has ever witnessed, but also the fourth of July is about perseverance through difficult times.

The New Objectivity?
Thursday, 01 July 2010 21:22
Chritian J. Riehle
There is often a conception that the self described moderates are somehow more objective than those who espouse ideas on the right. The left, and many on the right, often only get their input from their side, but self described moderates get their news ostensibly from the left. Oh blessed moderates. They are so well versed and so enlightened, that we should all bask in their glory. Right? I have to clarify, there are relative moderates, and objective conservatives, who can see when both sides have arguments with merit. The more objective avoid guilt by association, conspiracy theory and can see some some validity on both sides. The self described moderates,

It’s A Question of Class

There have been several times when Utah Senate candidate Mike Lee could have taken the high road and run a campaign on substance and issues. No such luck. His campaign could more easily be described as an exercises in guilt by association, demonizing his opponent and generally showing very little class.Immanuel Kant, (18th Century German Ethicist) once wrote, “If man makes himself a worm he must not complain when he is trodden on.” I’ve often told my friends and family that those institutions that would seek to diminish class distinctions in society, create a society with no class. This is what has happened in countless people in the country, but it is most prominent in political races. Case in point is the way that Mike Lee

Reality Slate
I suppose that you might suspect this already, but I am deeply suspicious that Obama is sorry that he ever ran for the Presidency, and even sorrier that he won. I think that he regularly wakes up overwhelmed, sorry that he has to go into his daily briefings, sorry that he has to face the pressing issues of the day, sorry that he has to put on his happy face, again. But he goes through the motions as he doesn’t really have the option of giving up his office. It’s no wonder that the man is out golfing so often, for his frustration level has got to be about as high as, as, well . . . mine, and, apparently, nearly two thirds of the population. At least I get to put aside the problems of the world for a few minutes, puttering about the house or being with friends and family,

Hate! …and other words that show YOU are wrong.
Tuesday, 15 June 2010 22:01
Christian J. Riehle
If a politician wants to win a debate, electoral race or public opinion battle, there is one golden word that ensures victory. If an opponent can be labeled as one who hates, then the debate or race can easily be over.
When it comes to any of the major debates today, the “hate” label is placed on those who disagree with “new” initiatives. But why is it so effective to use a word (or words like it) that is so subjective? Why do so many people glom onto such a label and turn against anyone who has been labeled thusly and what is actual hatred anyway?
We hear regularly that those who oppose
